Viber monitoring: what to verify

Device-location sharing does not give anyone your Viber messages. Viber says 1-on-1 chats, groups and 1-on-1 calls are end-to-end encrypted, that the keys are stored only on your devices, and that it does not keep messages once they are delivered. Viber's help describes one route for chats to appear on another screen: a Viber desktop or tablet app activated on your account. You can see and deactivate those from your phone under Settings › Account › Desktop and tablets.

Verdict
Desktop list and PIN

Treat claims to read Viber messages as separate from lawful device-location sharing. Viber's help describes end-to-end encrypted chats with keys kept only on your devices. The realistic ways in are a desktop or tablet activated on your account, or software installed on the phone.

How to check a Viber claim against Viber's own help

  1. Name the exact information the service claims to show. Is it messages, a location, or your online status? Viber says its servers can see your Viber name, phone number, device and activity information. Message content in 1-on-1 and group chats is a different matter, because Viber says it is end-to-end encrypted.
  2. Look for the encryption lock in your chats. On your phone, open a chat, tap Info and then Chat info (Android) or the chat name (iOS), and look for the Encryption lock under the picture. Viber says that if you do not see the lock, someone in the chat is using a version older than 6.0 and should update.
  3. Check where your account is active. On your phone, tap More › Settings › Account › Desktop and tablets. Every computer or tablet using your Viber account is listed there. Select one and tap Deactivate to log it out remotely. Viber suggests exactly this if you forgot to deactivate Viber on a public computer.
  4. Set up the 2-step verification PIN. In More › Settings › Privacy › 2-step verification, choose a six-digit PIN and an email address for resets. Viber asks for the PIN when you set up a new phone, change your number or email, and deactivate a desktop or tablet from your phone.
  5. Never hand over an activation code or PIN. Viber says that with a PIN set, no one can take over your account on a different phone unless they know the PIN. A monitoring service that needs your code or PIN is asking to become you on Viber.
  6. Rule out software on the phone itself. In the FTC's words, stalkerware is an app someone puts on the device, sometimes only after the phone has been rooted or jailbroken, and it is built so the owner does not notice it. The FTC's practical step is to keep an abuser from unsupervised access to your phone. Viber's settings will not show software installed outside Viber.
The responsible-use ladder Four cases from clearly allowed to stop: own device, minor child openly, another adult with consent, and another adult covertly which carries legal risk. 1 · Your own device — always fine OK 2 · Minor child, openly — fine OK 3 · Another adult, with consent — fine OK 4 · Another adult, covertly wiretap & computer-access laws — not legal advice STOP
Illustration of whose Viber is yours to look at: your own account and devices, a child's phone set up openly together, another adult only by their agreement. Opening someone else's account is where it stops. Not a real interface and not legal advice.

Which Viber claim did you see?

Pick the promise and read what Viber's help says about it.

Viber describes encrypted chats it cannot read.

Viber says only the sender and the intended receiver can see a message's contents, and that neither Rakuten Viber nor anyone else can read encrypted messages. It says the keys are stored only on your devices and messages are not kept once delivered.

Do this: Do not pay for a remote chat reader. There is nothing for it to read on Viber's side.

Edge cases — what Viber's help says

Old versions show no lock
End-to-end encryption is available from Viber version 6.0. If a chat shows no encryption lock, Viber says either you or someone in the chat is on an older version.
Deactivating deletes desktop data
Viber says deactivating or uninstalling the desktop app logs you out there and permanently deletes its data, including media download folders. It does not affect Viber on your phone.
Five wrong PINs
If the PIN is entered incorrectly five times while setting up a new phone, Viber blocks that activation for five days. The old phone, desktop and tablet keep working.
Forgotten PIN and lost email
Viber uses your email to reset a forgotten PIN. If you forget the PIN and cannot get into that email, Viber says you may be locked out of your account.
Hidden and disappearing chats
Viber says hidden chats are password protected and that you are notified if someone screenshots a disappearing message. These protect content on the device. They are not a monitoring tool for anyone else.
Parent controls
Viber says minors cannot change privacy settings that automatically block content personalisation and data collection. The help pages checked here do not describe a parent view of a child's chats.

What to do instead

Lock down your account

Set a 2-step verification PIN with an email you can reach, and review Desktop and tablets on your phone.

Verify a contact

Add people you talk to often to Trusted contacts, so you can verify that your connection is secure each time you chat or call them.

Share location openly

If family members want each other's location, use a family location feature on purpose, one that everyone can see is on.

Hide sensitive chats on your own phone

Viber lets you hide chats from your main chat screen, and says hidden chats are password protected. Use it for conversations other people who pick up your phone should not see.

The honest limit An app claiming broad chat access needs more scrutiny than a normal location permission. This guide covers your own Viber account and devices. It does not provide access to anyone else's messages.

A website cannot pull Viber chats from a phone number. Viber says it does not hold delivered messages and cannot decrypt encrypted ones, so there is nothing on its side for a third party to fetch. A new phone needs the activation code, and with 2-step verification it also needs your PIN. A desktop or tablet shows up in your own list. The remaining route is software installed on the phone itself, and the FTC's answer to that is to keep an abuser from unsupervised access to your phone.
