WeChat monitoring: what to verify
WeChat says it does not store your chat history on its servers, so that third parties, including WeChat itself, cannot view the content of your messages. History lives on the devices that sent or received it. That means the only documented places a WeChat chat appears are devices logged in to the account, and a new device needs the account password or a code plus a second check. A computer login has to be confirmed on the phone. A service that offers to read WeChat from an ID or a number is promising something WeChat's own help describes as unavailable even to WeChat.

Before you believe a third-party monitoring claim, review WeChat's own account security and its location-sharing feature. Chats are kept on devices, not on WeChat's servers, and every new login is verified. This site cannot connect to WeChat accounts or private chats, and WeChat's help describes no way for an outside service to do so.
How to check a WeChat monitoring claim
- Separate location from conversation. WeChat's documented location features are things a person does inside a chat: Send Location shares one point, and Real-time Location lets a group of friends appear on one map. Both are sent by the person sharing. Neither is a hidden feed, and neither gives access to chats.
- Ask where the chats would come from. WeChat says message history stays only on the devices that sent or received it and is not copied between devices automatically. Moving it takes Chat Log Migration, Favorites, or a backup to WeChat for Windows, all done from the account itself.
- Know how WeChat protects a new login on your account. WeChat says a first login on a new device needs your ID and password, or your mobile number and a verification code, followed by a second verification, such as scanning a QR code with your previous device. WeChat for Windows or Mac must be confirmed on your phone. A “monitoring” service that needs any of this is asking for account credentials, not offering monitoring.
- Check your own Manage Devices list. Go to Me > Settings > Account Security > Manage Devices. Delete any device you don't recognise; it will have to verify identity again before it can log back in.
- Lock down your account if anything looks wrong. Change your password under Account Security > Password. If you cannot log in, freeze the account from the login page under More Options > WeChat Security Center > Freeze Account.
- Note what the help does not say. WeChat's help pages we read describe no parental monitoring feature and no outside access to chats. Where a claim depends on either, the official help does not describe it.
What exactly is being offered?
Pick the claim you saw and compare it with what WeChat documents.
Not supported by WeChat's help.
WeChat says it doesn't keep chat history on its servers, and that third parties, including WeChat itself, can't view message content. An ID or a phone number gives a website no device and no login. Nothing in WeChat's help describes a route from an ID to someone's chats.
Do this: Don't pay; the claim describes access WeChat says even it does not have.
Only if they share it in a chat.
Real-time Location is started from inside a chat with “+” > Location > Real-time Location, and everyone taking part appears on one map. Send Location shares one fixed point. The person decides to share. The help page does not describe how long a session lasts or whether it ends on its own.
Do this: Ask the person to share in a chat with you; that is the documented route.
Not without the account holder approving it on their own phone.
WeChat for Windows or Mac has to be confirmed on the phone; WeChat says you can't log in on the computer without logging in on mobile. A computer that is logged in also appears under Manage Devices on that phone, where the owner can delete it. Logging in to another person's WeChat is account access, not monitoring.
Do this: If this is about your own account, check Manage Devices now.
Check devices, then secure.
Look at Manage Devices for anything unfamiliar and delete it. Change your password. If you've lost the phone or can't log in, freeze the account. Freezing is temporary: it doesn't delete anything, and friends can still find you and send you messages.
Do this: After you get back in, delete unknown devices again and re-link your number.
Use the phone's own family tools.
The WeChat help pages we read describe no parental monitoring feature. For a child in your care, use the controls on the phone itself, such as app permissions and the platform's family settings, and agree openly on how location is shared.
Do this: Agree openly with your child on app permissions and location sharing using the phone's own family settings.
Edge cases WeChat's help describes
- Phone plus computer is allowed
- WeChat supports being logged in on a phone and on the website, WeChat for Windows or an iPad at the same time. So a second session is not proof of anything; check whether you recognise it in Manage Devices.
- Web and desktop are not combined
- WeChat's help says the same account cannot be logged in to Web WeChat and WeChat for Windows/Mac at the same time. If you see a prompt that you're logged in elsewhere, WeChat suggests logging out and in again.
- Freezing has a limit
- Freezing stops anyone using the account without cancelling it. WeChat warns against freezing and unfreezing too often: the account may then be frozen automatically and you can't unfreeze it yourself.
- Appeals come back by SMS
- If your password or linked accounts were changed, you can appeal from the login page. WeChat says the result arrives by SMS within 24 hours. If approved, a new password is sent, and previously linked accounts are unlinked and need re-linking.
- A lost phone
- Log in from another device as soon as you can, remove the old phone from Trusted Devices, and change the mobile number on the account. WeChat says the old number is then unlinked.
- Stopping WeChat's own access to location
- Location in WeChat goes through the phone's location permission. On Android, setting the app's location to “Don't allow” means the app can't use location, even while you're using it.

If what you need is legitimate
You want to meet up or check someone arrived
Ask them to share Real-time Location in your chat, or send you a single location.
You moved to a new phone
Use Chat Log Migration or back up to WeChat for Windows; history does not move by itself.
You suspect a stranger has your account
Delete unknown devices, change your password and, if you can't get in, freeze the account and appeal.
This site cannot connect to WeChat accounts or read private chats, and it does not find a person's position from a WeChat ID or a phone number. WeChat says it does not keep message history on its servers. A service that claims to read it from outside is selling something WeChat says isn't there.

Questions people ask
Does WeChat keep my chats on its servers?
No, according to WeChat's help. It says it does not store your chat log or message history on its servers, so that third parties, including WeChat itself, can't view the content of your messages. History stays on the devices that sent or received it.
Why didn't my old chats appear on my new phone?
Because WeChat doesn't move history between devices automatically. To bring it across, use Chat Log Migration, Favorites, or a backup to WeChat for Windows.
Can someone log in to my WeChat with just my number?
A first login on a new device needs your ID and password, or your number plus a verification code, and then a second check, such as a QR code scanned on your previous phone. Keep those codes to yourself.
A WeChat contact asked me to help verify their login. What should I do?
Only approve a request if the person asked you directly and you're sure it's them, for example after calling them. If the request came out of nowhere, do nothing.
How do I see which devices are logged in to my WeChat?
Go to Me > Settings > Account Security > Manage Devices. You can delete any device you don't recognise; it will need to verify identity before logging in again.
What happens when I freeze my WeChat account?
Freezing temporarily stops anyone using the account. It does not cancel or delete it, and your friends can still find you and send messages. Avoid freezing and unfreezing repeatedly.
Does WeChat share location in the background?
WeChat documents location sharing only as something a person starts inside a chat: a single Send Location or a group Real-time Location map. The help page does not describe a hidden or background share.
