iPhone family location sharing
On iPhone, family location runs through Family Sharing and the Find My app. The family organizer sets up location sharing for the group, each member gets a message and chooses whether to share back, and anyone can stop sharing at any time. For a child, a parent can turn on Automatically Share Location so that only parents and guardians in the group see the child's location. Everything happens through Apple's own settings on each person's device, where each person can see it.

Verified: October 2026 against Apple Support official help.
Apple's family and Find My tools let participating people share location through their Apple accounts and device settings. Adults choose to share; for a child, a parent can share automatically with parents and guardians only. It is location, visible and stoppable — not access to messages or calls.
How to set it up and keep it honest
- Check Family Sharing membership. One adult, the family organizer, invites the others; a group is you and up to five other members. A Child Account is required for children under 13 and available up to 18.
- Turn on Location Services. Apple says that to share your location you must have Location Services turned on in Settings > Privacy & Security. When an app uses it, a black or white arrow appears in the status bar or Control Center.
- Start sharing with Apple's control. The organizer sets up location sharing for the entire family group, and the organizer's location is shared with everyone, including members added later. Each family member receives a message and can choose to share their location back.
- Pick the device that represents you. If you carry more than one Apple device, go to Settings, tap your name, tap Find My, then tap Use this iPhone as My Location, so family members see the device you actually carry.
- For a child, decide on Automatically Share Location. When it is on for a child, only parents and guardians in the family group can see the child's location. Apple notes that children and teens with Screen Time turned on may not be able to change their own location sharing settings — tell your child if that applies.
- Show everyone where to review or stop it: the People tab in Find My lists who you share with, and to stop for everyone Apple's steps are open Find My, select the Me tab and turn off Share My Location.
Who in your family is sharing?
Pick the person you are setting up and read what Apple's help says applies.
You switch it on for the group.
Apple says the organizer sets up location sharing for the entire family group, and the organizer's location is then shared with everyone, including people added later. Other members receive a message and choose whether to share back.
Do this: Turn on sharing, then tell each member what they will see.
Their choice.
Family members appear in the People tab automatically, but Apple says they still have to share their location with you. An adult can share for an hour, until the end of the day, indefinitely or for a custom period, and stop any time.
Do this: Ask; do not assume a family role means sharing.
Parents and guardians only.
With Automatically Share Location on, only parents and guardians in the group can see the child's location, including ones added later. With Screen Time on, the child may not be able to change the setting.
Do this: Explain the setting to your child and agree when you will review it.
Revisit the arrangement.
Apple's Child Account is available up to 18, and with Screen Time on a teen may not be able to change their own sharing. The official help does not describe an age at which automatic sharing switches off by itself, so the change is a family decision.
Do this: Agree together when sharing moves from automatic to your teen's own choice.
Stopping is built in.
Turn off Share My Location in the Me tab, or stop with one person in Find My, Maps or Messages. Stopping in one app stops across apps. Apple says the person is not notified, though people you shared with may notice that you stopped, and on earlier operating systems they may receive a notification in Messages.
Do this: Respect the choice and talk about it rather than reversing it.
Details that change how it behaves
- Location notifications are visible
- Family members can set a notification for when you arrive at or leave a place. Apple says that if someone sets a location-based notification, you get a notification, and if they try to set a recurring one, such as every time you leave work, you have to accept the invitation first.
- New members see the organizer
- After the organizer turns on location sharing, Apple says the organizer's location is automatically shared with everyone, and any new family members added to the group later. An organizer who prefers not to share with a new member should check the People list.
- It appears in two apps
- When you agree to share, Apple says your family members see your location in the Find My app and Messages. Tell your family where to look, so nobody assumes it is hidden in one place.
- Screen Time can lock a child's setting
- Children and teens with Screen Time turned on may not be able to change their own location sharing settings. That is a parental choice to explain, not to hide.
- The wrong device can represent you
- If an iPad at home is set as My Location, family members see the iPad. Use this iPhone as My Location fixes that.

If full-time sharing is not the right fit
Share one spot, not a stream
In Maps or Messages you can drop a pin. Apple says that shares only that current location, and the person can't see your ongoing location as you move.
Pause for everyone
Turning off Share My Location in the Me tab stops sharing with all family members at once, without removing anyone from Family Sharing.
Child on Android
Apple's family location is for Apple devices. A child's Android phone uses Google Family Link instead.
Someone feels unsafe
Safety Check lets a person review and stop sharing with people and apps quickly; Emergency Reset stops it everywhere at once.
Find My only shows people who share with you and devices on your own Apple Account. No website can pull a family member's iPhone location from a phone number or an Apple ID name; location reaches you only because the person, or a parent for a child, turned sharing on.

Questions people ask
Does joining Family Sharing share my location automatically?
Not for every member. Family members appear in the People tab, but Apple says they still have to share their location with you. The organizer's location is shared with the group, including members added later, once the organizer turns sharing on. Ask each adult before you assume they share.
Who can see my child's location?
When Automatically Share Location is turned on for a child, only parents and guardians in the family group can see it, including parents and guardians added later. Before you add another adult as a parent or guardian, tell your child that this person will see them too.
Can my child turn it off?
Apple says children and teens with Screen Time turned on may not be able to change their own location sharing settings. Without that restriction, sharing can be stopped like anyone else's. Agree in advance what happens if your child wants it off, so the setting does not become a secret fight.
Will someone know if I stop sharing?
Apple says the person you stop sharing with won't be notified, but its personal safety guide adds that people you shared with may notice that you've stopped, and on earlier operating systems they may receive a notification in Messages. If stopping could cause conflict, plan the conversation first.
Why does my family see my iPad instead of my iPhone?
Find My uses one device as My Location. On the device you carry, go to Settings, tap your name, tap Find My, then tap Use this iPhone as My Location. Ask a family member to check that your point now moves with your phone.
Can a family member get an alert every time I leave work?
Only if you agree. Apple says you get a notification when someone sets a location-based notification about you, and for a recurring one, such as every time you leave work, you have to accept the invitation first. Decline it if you did not discuss it.
Does family location sharing show messages or calls?
The official help does not describe any access to messages or calls through location sharing; Apple's family location features share where a device is. If someone claims more, ask them to show the setting in Apple's own help.
Can I share one place without sharing all the time?
Yes. Apple says that when you drop a pin, you share only that current location, and the person can't see your ongoing location as you move. Use it for a meeting point instead of turning on ongoing sharing.
